Why Education Must Lead the Intelligence Revolution

AI is rapidly making traditional education obsolete while threatening students’ potential for self-determination. We’re developing new approaches that harness AI to empower human creativity and ensure the sacred convenat people hold with divine nature. We propose several initiatives for education in the AI era: researching education’s historical successess and current failures to enchance technical, cultural, and moral apptitude; reating institutional models for fleible and locally situated learning; fostering public engagement; and developing curricular frameworks that addresss the geopolitical and planetary crises we are facing. The Divinity School steps into the heart of this calling, serving as a living case study for transformational education: training the meta-cognitive skills needed to navigate an AI-shaped world. Through direct collaborations with municipalities on education design and strategy, we can transform local and national education systems — an imperative to securing any nation’s future. Our mission is to move beyond critique to actively shape education’s future through public discourse, policy innovation and real-world implementation. This brief describes our initiatives.

Throughout time leaders have forwarded the course of history, but most of them were captured by the dominant narratives of their era. In recent decades, when television and later the internet emerged, educational leaders abdicated their obligation to generations of students to the whims of the market and the egregious demands of the technical growth obligation. The results were tragic: intellectual stagnation, moral irrelevance, suppressed curiosity, and diminished creative experimentation. Now, with the rise of AI, if educational leaders merely fall in line once again, an even greater tragdy looms: the surrender of human identity and agency to the machines.

The technology itself isn’t our doom— that hinges on how educators respond. We must teach young people to treat AI as a tool, maintaining intellectual and psychological distance from it, so it never becomes a super-subject ot the self, and must train the meta-cognitive skills needed so that AI remains an instrument to be wielded according to each individual’s authentic desires and choices.

To do this, we have to know how we got here— to understand how the education system fundamentally failed its mission during critical technological shifts— remaining passive while new communications technologies transformed Western values, capitulating as neo-liberal bureaucracy stangled authentic learning, and standing idle while an aging ruling class, comfortable with institutional inertia, allowed government and Wall Street excesses to erode both public trust and the middle class.

Educators must become leaders again— leaders who change the course of history by transcending the given reality of their times; leaders with penetrating vision who hold themselves to a higher purpose; leaders who ground the new generation in moral dignity. We must reclaim the sacred trust that society bestows on those who are responsible for the nation’s future.
